AUTONOMOUS DRIVING RESEARCH / YOLOPv2 PANOPTIC PERCEPTION & OPTIMAL MOTION PLANNING

Panoptic Autonomous Driving Perception: Tri-Task Neural Inference, 2D BEV Radar & Curvature-Bounded Trajectory Planning

The YOLOPv2 Autonomous Trajectory Tracker is an end-to-end perception and motion-planning pipeline designed for real-time intelligent vehicle navigation. Built on YOLOPv2 (leveraging the cutting-edge YOLOv7 Extended Efficient Layer Aggregation Network — E-ELAN) and executed via ONNX Runtime with DirectML GPU acceleration, the system simultaneously performs tri-task perception: 2D object bounding box detection, dense drivable area segmentation, and lane line detection at over 30 FPS. Detections are warped via homography into a 2D aerial Bird's-Eye View (BEV) radar map, where a multi-tranche candidate optimization engine computes a curvature-bounded optimal spline trajectory (κ_max = 0.003, R_min ≥ 28m) with exponential moving average (EMA) smoothing and heading continuity, safely steering the ego vehicle across both standard highways and unmarked rural/mountain roads.

Tri-Task Panoptic Neural Backbone (YOLOPv2 / E-ELAN)

Integrates a pre-trained YOLOPv2 ONNX neural network featuring the YOLOv7 E-ELAN architecture. In a single forward pass, the shared backbone generates three multi-scale task heads: multi-class object bounding boxes via anchor-free detection (+6.7% mAP over v1), dense drivable area segmentation (+5.3% F1 score), and pixel-level lane line detection. DirectML execution provider harnesses modern GPU hardware for continuous sub-33ms frame times.

02

2D Aerial Bird's-Eye View (BEV) Live Radar Map

Projects front-camera perspective coordinates into top-down metric orthographic space using a calibrated homography matrix M_bev (360×720 px BEV space, 1 px ≈ 0.08 m). The live BEV map displays the ego vehicle, lateral boundary margins, detected forward obstacles, and lane corridor centroids, providing clear situational awareness decoupled from camera pitch and roll artifacts.

03

Curvature-Constrained Optimal Trajectory Planning

Discretizes the forward drivable corridor into longitudinal depth tranches (10 px slices up to 50 m horizon) and evaluates candidate lane center waypoints using an objective cost function balancing historical temporal alignment (w_hist = 0.50), lateral tracking continuity, and ego-bumper alignment. A dynamic relaxation optimizer strictly limits the maximum geometric spline curvature |κ(y)| ≤ 0.003 (minimum turning radius R_min ≥ 28 m) and applies Laplacian smoothing (0.12 weight) to completely eliminate high-frequency steering snap and actuator jerk.

04

Generalization to Unmarked Rural & Mountain Roads

Unlike brittle classical computer vision pipelines that fail when lane markings disappear on weathered asphalt, YOLOPv2 dynamically isolates contiguous drivable corridors. The tracker computes running median lane widths across intermittent markings (45–115 px nominal) and seamlessly falls back to road contour centroid navigation, accurately carving smooth paths around parked vehicles and narrow coastal curves.

Autonomous Motion Planning & Multi-Modal Perception Synergy

The YOLOPv2 Autonomous Trajectory Tracker bridges the gap between deep perception and kinematic vehicle actuation. By converting multi-task neural segmentations into a metric Bird's-Eye View and enforcing strict geometric curvature constraints on planned trajectories, the system delivers jitter-free, human-like steering paths suitable for steer-by-wire ADAS controllers and autonomous vehicles.
